Stefan Ehrmeier is a German endurance athlete and ultrarunner. He has competed in numerous high-profile trail races, and is the co-founder of SALTY Trailrunning.

What are your main activities?
Endurance sports with a focus on ultrarunning.
In addition: mountaineering, freeriding, ski touring, and hiking.

Why do you love it?
It gives me freedom: to run or hike depending on how I feel, to pause and enjoy the views, to keep it short or extend it to days and weeks. And most important: It’s not just about running – it’s a lifestyle. In addition, I am currently doing my education as International Mountain Leader (UIMLA), and I love to show others my way of seeing nature and share my values.

What advice would you give to others who want to excel in this activity like you?
Don’t hesitate or wait – just do it and you will see the benefits.

What activities did you enjoy during your childhood?
Skiing whenever possible and, through my local sports club, doing everything they offered – from athletics to soccer and tennis, always together with friends.

How would you describe the nature where you grew up?
A safe space for us as kids where we spent every free minute outside – mostly in the woods and in the mountains hiking.

Do you have a profession alongside your main activity?
I am Co-Founder of SALTY Trailrunning (saltytrailrunning.com), podcast host, moderator, and a specialist for garlic butter for BBQ.

What do you think about right before you fall asleep at night?
As soon as my head touches the pillow, I sleep – so not much time to think about anything – haha.

Which three artists do you listen to the most – and why?
At the moment: Lorna Shore. I absolutely love the heavy energy of the songs.

Who inspires you the most today?
My daughter Anna – it is very refreshing to see the world through kids’ eyes.

If you were to create your own life motto, what would it be?
“Great things never came from comfort zones.”
