Whether you’re hiking to the top of a snow-capped peak, ripping through the forest on a single track adventure, or waking up with an early morning jog. No matter your preferred outdoor activity, proper gear and layering are essential to conquering unpredictable weather throughout the year.

There are many of us out there who avoid layering like the plague. Yes, it is a bit of extra work and planning is involved, but trust us! Having proper clothing will keep you out in nature longer and maximize your enjoyment. Below, we’ve debunked a few myths that have perhaps previously given layers a bad reputation.

Layering adds unnecessary bulk.
Too many layers might stand in the way of your range of motion and function. And the unflattering extra bulk can be hard to ignore. But if you find the right fit, we guarantee that extra fleece underneath your hardshell, or knee high socks will only add to the high function and overall look of your gear!

If you prefer wearing as little as possible, then consider wearing an outer layer that is designed to take over the job of both mid and base layers.
"I love my lofoten Primaloft80 Anorak on and off the mountain. Instead of having to bring thermal shorts or a skirt, the anorak does the job of providing the extra warmth needed on most days," says ski Ambassador,” Merrick Mordal

Too many layers make me sweat
Most of us are guilty of adding on a few too many pieces in preparation for the day ahead causing us to sweat uncomfortably. It’s a fine balance for sure, but you’re less likely to get to the distressing point of overheating if you choose breathable materials.
"The falketind Octa Jacket is my go-to perfect mid-layer. Light and easy to compress, it also works as a light outer windproof layer when body temp goes up. The best part: it works in town as well over a T-shirt. I always travel with it", Sebastian Copeland

I don’t need layers. It’s summer time.
This is perhaps one of the most common assumptions. The sun's rays have a way of making us want to drop our layers entirely. That being said, warm weather temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day with mornings and evenings often cooler than the sweltering heat of the afternoon. And don’t forget your cap for some extra UV protection.

But wool is itchy
That thick itchy sweater many of us were forced to wear when we were young may have created memories so vivid, we’re overwhelmed with the powerful urge to itch every time we think about that rough, wool sweater.
However, having a wool base layer can save the day on many occasions. There is a saying in Norway, Ull er gull (wool is gold) and it’s true!

"Whenever temperatures drop below 5C, I put on my norrøna PureUll and I don’t take it off until the Summer comes around again - and even then I wear it just in another color! Wool is a natural product, temperature regulating, anti-bacterial, and keeps me warm even when the material gets wet + dries super fast! It’s super soft and comfortable so I use it as a base layer for everyday use, skiing, climbing, kayaking, running, hiking, and literally everything else,” says Fien Zweiten
